Pacific Coast: Ancient Traditions

DAY 1 

Depart from Guayaquil early morning.  Take the Pacific Coast Highway for 1H30 approximately.

Visit at Atahualpa, a small village of ebony-artists, who have been working in furniture for more than 100 years ago.  Continue the visit through the Oil Camp of Ancon, and the fishermen village of Anconcito. Lots of beautiful and unexpected moments can be experienced in this place.

Continue along the Mar Bravo Sea Shore Beach to visit the jewelry makers of spondylus, this magnificent shell used by our ancestral tribes as the most valuable object.

Continue to Salinas, the main beach port of the Peninsula. Visit the Chocolatera ocean view point.   Accommodation is at a local guest house.

DAY 2    

Visit to the archaeological site of Sumpa, if it is open.  From here, take the north highway, passing along the fishermen villages of San Pablo, Libertador Bolivar; arrive to Valdivia to visit the aquarium.  At this place you will be able to admire fauna species of the region.  Forward north, a short visit to Barcelona and Sinchal, the two towns that became famous because all the families work the Straw…the principal material used on the toquilla hats.  These elderly people had been working in peeling, cooking and drying the toquilla and have it ready for the knitters of the zone.

Another important mean of life of these people is the vegetable ivory seed.  Sitio Nuevo and San Antonio are other surprises.  Visit the settlers’ homes turned out into their studios, with rustic machines and all their creativity to bring up amazing carved designs.  Arrive to Montañita Beach for lunch.  Continue on the highway north, passing by Olon, San Jose, Ayampe and Salango, to finally arrive to Puerto Lopez.  Accommodation is at Mantaraya Lodge.

DAY 3 

After breakfast early departure to Puerto Lopez, just 5 minutes away from the lodge, to take the boat ride to Isla de la Plata, the “little Galapagos of the Coast”.  After this ride, a short visit to Los Frailes Beach, a beautiful virgin beach inserted in the Machalilla National Park.  Back to Mantaraya for dinner and overnight.

DAY 4

After breakfast, departure for a visit to Agua Blanca in site archaeological museum, to admire vestiges of the first Pre-Hispanic cultures settled in the South American coast. Continue to Montecristi, hometown for the panama hats knitters.  Continue to the port of Manta for lunch.  A short panoramic visit and then take the highway back to Guayaquil for a 3 hours driving ride.   Arrive in Guayaquil and accommodation is at a local hotel.
