Santay Island is located in front of the city of Guayaquil, in the middle of the Guayas River. Its 2200 hectares and surrounding waters have been declared Wetlands of International Importance or Ramsar site, for their natural resources and environmental services but especially for their importance for birds. It registers 60 species of plants distributed in 43 families, the mangrove forests stand out. The fauna consists of 13 species of mammals, standing out the tigrillo and the anteater. 12 species of reptiles of the coast and the avifauna is conformed by more than 130 species of birds.
