Cuenca is located in the southern part of the Andean Region, 119 miles from Guayaquil. It is known as the Athens of Ecuador due to its culture and contribution to the arts. It is the third most populated city after Guayaquil and Quito. Its average temperature is 62ºF. Four rivers cross the city: the Tomebamba, Yanuncay, Machangara and Tarqui.

Due to its architecture and culture, Cuenca was declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Its Historic Center has beautiful buildings of colonial and republican style; it has an archaeological area, markets, and the Tomebamba ravine with the 3 de Noviembre Road; and several sites with important views.

One of the activities of great tradition in Cuenca is the weaving of toquilla straw. Their straw hats are recognized worldwide for their high quality, elegance and distinction.

Ceramic objects such as pots, dishes and ornaments are made by master potters who demonstrate skill and creativity.

Cuenca´s jewelry is recognized as one of the best in the country due to its quality, originality and good taste. Earrings, rings, bracelets and chains are made in gold, silver and other materials, with contemporary designs, although influenced by pre-Columbian and colonial art.

In Cuenca catches the attention the typical clothing worn by women: skirts, shawls, blouses, etc., embroidered in traditional folk style with flowers, petals and leaves.

Cuenca owns a great gastronomic tradition. The combination of Andean and European ingredients results in a delicious culinary fusion.
