We are pleased to inform that on February, 2017 it was inaugurated the “Symbol of Hope”, exhibit room with the remains of Lonesome George, the giant tortoise from Pinta Island.

Lonesome George was one of the most famous reptiles in the world for being the last survivor of the species Chelonoidis abingdoni who lived in the Charles Darwin Scientific Station on Santa Cruz Island for four decades until his death in 2012.

The body of Lonesome George was shipped and embalmed in New York, after which he spent a year on display at the American Museum of Natural History and has finally returned to the place where he spent his last years.

This is part of “The Tortoise Trail” which is the path that the Galapagos National Park has designed to raise awareness of the importance of species conservation.

The exhibit room has the same light, temperature and humidity conditions as the American Museum of Natural History, which will allow the body to be preserved without risk.

The room is open every day from 08h00 to 18h00, except on maintenance days.
